Sixteen-year-old Canadian Kristina Atkinson was inspired to write the following poem
when she saw a much younger girl who reminded her of herself at that age.

Daddy's Princess (Pink and Blue)

by Kristina Atkinson
Pink mittens
Blue hat
Daddy's princess
All of that

That was me
I was you
A mix'n'match
Of pink and blue

But the years
Went by so fast
My heart a fortress
Built to last

The blue remains
But pink is gone
Hair cut short
That once was long

Where will you be
Ten years away?
Daddy's princess
Here to stay?

Or will you be
The odd one out
The one who hides
As others shout

Who cries herself
To sleep at night
Who goes to school
And gets in fights

Who cannot win
Though hard she tries
Whose life is full
Of pain and lies

Of things she knows
But cannot tell
For fear they will not
Take it well

Of things she feels
And knows are true
That once pink princess
Now turned blue

Through sleepless nights
And lonely days
She remains aware
Of the part she plays

Until one day
She learns at last
She need not cling
To an empty past

She need not act
Another's part
Now free to do
What's in her heart

Now she finds
A whole new world
Where boys kiss boys
And girls kiss girls

And then one day
She sees a child
Fast asleep
Or running wild

Who wears pink mitts
And a blue hat
Daddy's princess
All of that

Remembers when
That child was she
And wonders who
That child will be
